The objective of this qualification is to enable learners to attain the knowledge and practical competencies needed to deal with a range of first aid situations and/or take on the role of appointed person in the workplace.
The courses run over one day and conforms to the Health and Safety Executive syllabus which satisfies the duty to provide an appointed person as required under the Health & Safety (First Aid at Work) Regulations. Principles covered: Understand the role of the first aider including reference to:
Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency. Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious ( including seizure) Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking. Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock. Provide appropriate first aid to minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters). Administer first aid to a casualty with:
- The importance of preventing cross infection
- The need for recording incidents and actions
- Use of available equipment
Recognise the presence of major illness and provide appropriate first aid (including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes
- Injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injury
- Chest injuries
- Burns and scalds
- Eye injuries
- Sudden poisoning
- Anaphylactic shock.
The learner will have the knowledge and skills needed to take on the role of appointed person in the workplace.
