Mental Health First Aid - Adult - March 2019

Outline

This two day Adult Mental Health First Aid Course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to:

  • Recognise the symptoms of mental health issues.
  • Provide initial help
  • Guide a person towards appropriate professional help

Mental Health First Aid will not teach you how to be a therapist, but upon completion of this two day course you will be able to say you are a Mental Health First Aider.

Description

You will learn to recognise the early signs of mental health problems and respond appropriately to assist people. You will gain practical skills to offer initial support to someone who is experiencing a mental health problem, until professional treatment can be accessed, while keeping yourself safe.

The course covers common mental health problems and has been designed to fit into four manageable chunks:

  • Mental Health First Aid, mental health and depression
  • Depression (continued) and suicidal crisis
  • Anxiety, personality disorders, eating disorders and self-harm
  • Psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

Outcomes

In each section you will learn how to:

  • Spot the early signs of a mental health issue
  • Feel confident helping someone experiencing a mental health issue
  • Provide help on a first aid basis
  • Help prevent someone from hurting themselves or others
  • Help stop a mental health issue from getting worse
  • Help someone recover faster
  • Guide someone towards the right support
  • Reduce the stigma of mental health issues

The sessions will be a mix of presentations, discussions and group work activities. The instructors will provide a safe learning environment and are trained to support you throughout the whole course. If you don't feel comfortable joining in certain parts, then there is no pressure to.

Everyone who attends will receive a copy of the Mental Health First Aid manual and workbook. When you have completed the course you will receive a certificate to confirm that you are a trained Mental Health First Aider.

Those who have live experience of mental health issues are not excluded from this training and bring added value to the course. However, those who have or are currently experiencing acute mental health issues or are undergoing on-going concurrent treatment for mental health issues may wish to apply when they are known to be in a stable period in order to have resilience reserves to assist others.

Audience

This course is for everyone aged 16 and upwards and you don't need any qualifications or experience in mental health to take part.
